Preparing a new caregiver
A relative or sitter may know children well and still not know where your flashlight is, which cup helps at bedtime or who may pick up from practice. A calm walk-through is kinder than a long list sent at the last minute.

Start with today
Explain when you are leaving, when you expect to return, where the child will be and what is different from an ordinary day.
Walk through the house or meeting place
Show exits, ordinary supplies, required safety equipment and the location of written instructions. Do not expect someone to find important information while a child is waiting.
Leave room for questions
Say which situations need an immediate call and which household details are simply preferences. Ask what the caregiver still feels unsure about before you go.
