Use a simple before, during and after structure when an ordinary family routine will change.
Before the change
- Identify what is changing and what will stay familiar.
- Confirm the responsible adults, transportation and contact details.
- Prepare required items and source instructions.
- Explain the next steps to the child in clear, age-appropriate language.
During the change
Keep one or two recognizable anchors where practical, such as the bedtime order, school-bag location or check-in routine. Share only updates that another caregiver needs to act on.
A flexible plan can still be clear: identify who makes the next decision and how the other caregivers will learn about it.
After the change
- Return borrowed or traveling items.
- Update information that should remain current.
- Note what helped the coordination process.
- Remove temporary reminders that are no longer relevant.
